Cambridge AS English Language 11th grade; Reading Assignment for 2022-2023
All students must read one of the following books. Please be prepared to test on the book you have read within the first week of school.
Becoming by Michelle Obama
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms.
The Cloudbuster Nine the untold story of Ted Williams and the baseball team that helped win WWII by Anne R. Keene
In 1943, while the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals were winning pennants and meeting in that year's World Series, one of the nation's strongest baseball teams practiced on a skinned-out college field in the heart of North Carolina. Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, and Johnny Sain were among a cadre of fighter-pilot cadets who wore the Cloudbuster Nine baseball jersey at an elite Navy training school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.
Into the Abyss: An Extraordinary True Story by Carol Shaben
On an icy night in October 1984, a commuter plane carrying nine passengers crashed in the remote wilderness of northern Alberta, killing six people. Four survived: the rookie pilot, a prominent politician, a cop, and the criminal he was escorting to face charges. As the men fight through the night to stay alive, the dividing lines of power, wealth, and status are erased, and each man is forced to confront the precious and limited nature of his existence.
Invested: Changing Forever the Way Americans Invest by Charles Schwab
Invested, the memoir of the entrepreneur Charles Schwab, is a classic saga of American capitalism. It is also an inspiring read, with life lessons that go far beyond the world of business. For those not familiar with his work, Mr. Schwab’s company revolutionized the way Americans were able to invest. The beneficial effects of what he accomplished ripple through the economy to this day.
Zoo Story: Life in the Garden of Captives by Thomas French Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist French goes behind the scenes at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo in this absorbing and balanced account that reveals extinction, conservation, and captivity issues in all their moral complexities and featuring a very memorable cast. We are forced to reconsider our notions of freedom and captivity when presented with such scenarios as 11 partially sedated wild South African elephants being moved to U.S. zoos to escape slaughter at home. A thoughtful and moving but unsentimental portrait of life in captivity and a broad introduction to some of its most salient—and intractable—dilemmas.
Cambridge AS English Language 11th grade; Writing Assignment for 2022 - 2023
Choose one scene from the book that you have read (above) and create a screenplay for that one particular scene. You should not write the entire book into a screenplay -- only one part of the novel.
Information on how to write a screenplay can be found here:
https://www.writersstore.com/how-to-write-a-screenplay-a-guide-to-scriptwriting/
You do not have to buy anything or sign up for anything from that website, but it is a great example of the elements of a screenplay. Pay particular attention to the Sample Screenplay Page at the very beginning of the website. Your document does not have to be the length that is discussed on the website. You should try to encapsulate only one scene from the book you have read, so the length may seem short, but you need to follow the format from the website
This should be typed in a google doc or Word format. If you are like me and prefer a Mac, you can use Pages. All google docs must have editable links or credit will not be given. Pay close attention to how the sample title page should be created. Do not worry about Spec Script or Software Presentation and Binding. Be prepared to submit the first days of school if you wish full credit.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to e-mail me over the summer [email protected]
